Splishing, squishing, splashing — ask any preschooler — water is wonderful!
Break up those hot summer days with some watery fun that's guaranteed to inspire giggles of delight. Here are seven creative wet and wild activities you can do to stay cool. Make sure to have a towel and change of clothes at the ready!
Paint the patio: Set out buckets of water filled with a variety of sizes of paintbrushes and let kids create designs on the ground. Whether it's a driveway, concrete patio or wood deck, you'll see the change in color when the water is applied. Best yet, it quickly evaporates like magic in the sun for clean fun over and over again!
Tea party: Set up a small pool or water table along with a variety of plastic cups, bowls, utensils and other "cooking" accessories. Then let little ones get creative while mixing and pouring their pretend creations. Just like kids can spend tons of time in the bathtub playing, you'll be amazed how much time they spend transferring water from cup to cup.
Melty race: Need a fun way to occupy a group of preschoolers? Fill an ice cube tray with water and in each slot add a plastic toy before freezing. Then give each child a cube and tell them the first person to remove the item wins! They can use their hands, feet and other creative methods to melt the ice cube the fastest.
Water sensory table: Set out a large plastic tub and transform the space into a mini beach escape. Add sand, rocks, shells and other treasures before adding the water. Then let kids play with the sensory space and explore with nets, spoons and cups. You might also add in some plastic figurines that can live on the pretend shoreline.
Car wash: Have some fun at the car wash ... mini version! Get out all the toy cars and set out tubs of water. Add some hand soap, washrags, brushes and sponges, and you have the makings of one of the most successful car washes in the neighborhood.
Icy treasure hunt: Put water in a bowl and add a variety of small plastic toys and trinkets. Once frozen, place on a tray or on the grass and let kids use play tools to tap, chip and saw away at the ice to retrieve the treasures one by one. This is great for individuals as well as a group effort.
Water tub relay race: Set up two tubs with cups and buckets in between. Fill one tub with water and leave the other empty. Then have races to see who can transfer the water from one tub to the other the fastest. Each person can choose from the different cups and containers to see what works best!
