Back to School: The Tradition of School Pictures and the Fall Season

When kids head back to school, it's an exciting time for everyone in the family. Children look forward to meeting their teacher, seeing friends and learning new things. Parents enjoy watching their kids become more independent and begin to develop new skills. Those first-day snapshots are a tradition that become a scrapbook staple.

As kids settle in, so too does the fall season. Preschoolers become more comfortable with the weekday routines and start to form bonds with their classroom family. Autumn unfolds in a burst of colorful leaves that crunch beneath their feet at recess. Pumpkins overtake classroom decor and become a common theme at craft time. Soon another school tradition will come that families can get excited about: picture day!

It's time to start brainstorming outfit ideas, scheduling those haircuts and practicing those not-so-cheesy smiles. When parents and caregivers look back on their own time in school, they likely fondly remember the picture-day tradition. Getting dressed in favorite clothes for this special day and grinning brightly in front of the camera made for a memorable school day.

Now that you're an adult, you can review school pictures and enjoy reminiscing while seeing how you looked at different ages. Plus, what's better than looking back and enjoying some of the interesting hair and clothing styles that have trended through the decades?

As this year's picture day approaches, preschoolers may get extra excited because this might be their first school picture. It's normal for them to feel a range of emotions, from anticipation to pangs of nervousness. You can help set the stage for success by stressing how picture day is a fun, positive experience and you remember your own experiences when you were little. Youngsters often want to be just like Mom or Dad, so these positive stories will put any worries at ease and entice them to follow in your footsteps.

Beyond talking, get kids involved in picking out an outfit and deciding on a hairstyle. They will be proud to show off their personality in those pictures! Above all else, don't put too much pressure on kids to get the perfect photograph. Most young kids do great at school pictures, and the experts at Lifetouch know just how to make them feel comfortable for that perfect pose. Plus, some of the pictures with goofy grins become the most memorable photos. If by chance the results are a dud, there are always free retakes.

School pictures are a fun fall tradition that are cherished throughout the generations. Considering today's high number of digital cell phone images, there's something truly special about a print you can display and enjoy for years to come.
