Whether it's spring break or another time period off of school, many parents decide to take PTO from work to spend some quality time with their little ones. If you've got a staycation coming up with your preschooler, the opportunities for fun are virtually endless! Here are 10 ideas for both parents and kids to inspire laughs and love while making lasting memories:
Virtual beach: Transform the living room into a virtual beach and pretend you're on a tropical vacation. Put out beach blankets, don swimsuits and sunglasses, throw around beach balls and play with clay in lieu of real sand.
Star gaze: Learn about the cosmos by visiting a local planetarium. None available? After dark, sit in your yard and try to identify constellations. Make an evening of it by having a bonfire and roasting s'mores.
Cook a meal: Flip through recipe books with your child and decide on a complete multi-course meal you can cook together. Then go shopping for ingredients and come home to whip up your goodies for a family feast.
Learn something new: Consider taking a class together to learn a new activity or hobby. For example, try out a family yoga class, a multi-age painting class or kid-friendly cooking class.
At-home spa day: Make time for manis and pedis for those little fingers and toes. Then have fun with facials complete with cucumber slices for your eyes. Iced drinks and a few finger sandwiches complete the experience.
Build a fort city: Not just one fort, but many! Bust out the blankets and pillows and go crazy building your own town. Once done, give it a creative family name and make an official town flag using paper and craft sticks.
Photo shoot: Dress up and have a funky fashion show including props like sunglasses, scarves and hats. Then ready your camera (cell phone, digital or instant, doesn't matter) and have fun capturing some magical moments.
Science experiments: Visit the local library and check out some books that feature kid-friendly science experiments and have fun by trying a few out at home. Alternatively, check out a list of awesome science experiments from No Guilt Mom.
Art exploration: Visit an art museum or gallery and discuss the works with your kids. What do they like? Does it make you feel happy, sad or another emotion? Then go home and recreate the art together. It's interesting to see everyone's interpretations.
Have a picnic: If the weather doesn't cooperate or it's just too cold during spring break where you live, set up a picnic in your living room. Bonus cool parent points with kids if you set it up in front of the TV and watch a movie.
